The district’s landscape is crisscrossed by numerous rivers, making it highly susceptible to flooding and river erosion. During the monsoon season, heavy rainfall and floods from upstream India wreak havoc on the region, submerging vast areas and displacing millions of people.
The Challenges of Monsoon Season
Every year, the monsoon season brings not only heavy rainfall but also the threat of flash floods. These floods often come with little warning, leaving the residents of Kurigram with minimal time to evacuate. The swift and unpredictable nature of these floods means that families can lose their homes, belongings, and livestock in a matter of hours. Additionally, at the beginning and end of the flood season, when the water recedes, river erosion becomes a significant concern. The relentless force of the rivers causes the banks to collapse, taking with them entire households and rendering thousands of people homeless.
Our Mission: Rapid Response and Relief
To address these challenges and protect the lives and livelihoods of the people affected by flood and river erosion, DFBY Foundation has established a dedicated Disaster Response Team. Our team is trained to act swiftly and efficiently in the face of natural disasters, ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
Swift Evacuation
One of the primary responsibilities of our Disaster Response Team is to ensure the rapid evacuation of flood-affected residents. When a flood strikes, every second counts. Our team members, equipped with essential safety gear such as life jackets, torchlights, and hand mics, are prepared to navigate through the floodwaters and reach those in need. We prioritize the safety of vulnerable individuals, including children, the elderly, and the disabled, ensuring they are transported to safe shelters without delay.
Providing Essential Supplies
In the aftermath of a flood, access to clean water, food, and medical supplies becomes critical. Our Disaster Response Team distributes oral saline, essential medicines, dry food, and water purification tablets to affected families. These supplies help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases and ensure that families have the necessary resources to survive until they can return to their homes.
Rehabilitating Affected Families
Rehabilitation is a crucial aspect of our mission. After the immediate danger has passed, our team works tirelessly to help families rebuild their lives. This includes providing materials for rebuilding homes, offering financial assistance, and supporting the relocation of families whose homes have been destroyed by river erosion. Training and Equipping Our Team
